NY Tax Preparer Arrested for Preparing False Returns
Eversley Barrett owns a tax preparation business, Eversley Tax, in New Windsor, New York where he prepared over 700 tax returns each year. The United States Department of Justice just arrested him for assisting the preparation of false and fraudulent tax returns and tax evasion.
From 2012 through 2016, the tax preparer prepared tax returns containing various fabricated and fraudulently inflated items such as filing statuses, rental real estate losses, unreimbursed employee business expenses, gifts to charity, real estate-related expenses and application of certain tax credits. This all resulted in refunds for clients that were fraudulent.
He faces 83 counts, each carrying a maximum of 3 years jail time. If Mr. Barrett’s business prepared your return, you should call us. The IRS may have contacted you already or likely will. If a friend or family member may have had their returns prepared by Mr. Barrett’s firm, let them know to contact us. If you are concerned about your own tax preparer, you should contact us as well.
The IRS is coming down hard on tax preparers and their clients. If you receive an audit notice, your first call should be to an attorney who you can speak confidentially with about your circumstances. Attorney-client communications about your situation will be privileged and cannot be discovered by the IRS or others. If you are a tax preparer and are concerned about your own exposure, please call us as well. The same attorney-client privilege will apply to our communications about your situation.
